Neural Signal Snapshot
Track Brain's Sound Journey
Hearing relies not only on the ear detecting sound, but also on the auditory nerve and brainstem transmitting signals accurately. When this pathway is disrupted, people may experience unclear hearing, sound distortion, asymmetry between ears, or unexplained hearing loss. Symptoms can occur gradually and may not always be detected by routine hearing tests alone.

Objective Assessment of the Auditory Nerve
Measuring How Sound Signals Reach the Brain
Auditory brainstem response testing evaluates how sound signals travel from the inner ear through the auditory nerve to the brainstem. During the test, small sensors are placed on the scalp and ears while clicking sounds are played through headphones. The sensors record electrical responses generated along the auditory pathway.
At Harley Street Audiovestibular Clinic, ABR testing is performed in a calm, controlled clinic environment. The test is non-invasive and painless, requiring no active response, and is suitable for adults who cannot reliably complete behavioural hearing tests. Results help identify delays or abnormalities in the nerve pathway and guide further investigation when hearing symptoms remain unexplained.
Pinpointing the Cause
Placing Nerve Testing in Clinical Context
Clarifying Complex Hearing Symptoms
Assessment begins with a detailed history, ear examination, and standard hearing tests, including Pure Tone Audiometry and speech-based measures. We recommend ABR testing when symptoms, asymmetry, or test findings suggest involvement beyond the inner ear.
Management is usually non-surgical. ABR results guide monitoring, reassurance, or referral for further imaging or neurological input when indicated. Further investigation is considered only when abnormalities are detected or when symptoms persist and significantly affect communication or daily functioning.
Wire Your Waves to Wellness
At Harley AVM, ABR testing is interpreted within an expert audiovestibular and neuro-auditory framework. Our clinicians focus exclusively on hearing and balance pathways, allowing us to integrate ABR findings with audiological results and patient symptoms. We prioritise clear explanations so you understand what the results mean and whether further action is required.
Testing, assessment, and follow-up are coordinated through one clinic, ensuring continuity of care and informed decision-making. If hearing symptoms remain unexplained, asymmetrical, or concerning, we invite you to book an assessment, request a call back, or submit an enquiry to explore appropriate next steps with our team.
