Vestibular Migraine Consultation

Balance is a complex combination of what we see, what we feel and what we hear. It involves your vestibular system, your brain, your vision and your joints. If any component of our balance equation is off, problems can occur including dizziness, nausea, vertigo and a general feeling of being unsteady on your feet. Vestibular Physiotherapy at Harley Street AVM is designed to treat those and other symptoms associated with loss of balance and restore equilibrium in a safe and effective way.

Vestibular Migraine Symptoms

The most obvious symptom of a vestibular migraine is dizziness. This is often accompanied by balance issues and light-headedness. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound and painful headaches. Dizziness and balance issues may pass in a matter of minutes or last for the better part of a day. Sometimes, it can become constant and result in chronic, constant dizziness.

Vestibular Migraine Diagnosis

During your vestibular migraine consultation at Harley St AVM, the doctor may perform various tests to determine if you have vestibular migraine. If it is determined that you do, you may be prescribed certain migraine preventative medications such as:

  • Triptans
  • Aspirin
  • Paracetamol
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)
  • Prochlorperazine or stemetil
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Beta-blockers
  • Anti-seizure medications

It may also be recommended that you make some lifestyle changes. These may include such things as:

  • Getting more rest
  • Avoiding certain foods that trigger the onset of symptoms
  • Making sure you eat meals on a set schedule
  • Increasing the amount of exercise you get
  • Practising stress reduction techniques
