Understanding Pressure Balance Inside the Ear

When Your Ears Struggle to Equalise Pressure

The eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the nose, opening briefly to equalise pressure and drain fluid. When this process fails, pressure builds or becomes unstable. People may experience blocked ears, muffled hearing, popping sensations, or discomfort during flights, colds, allergies, or altitude changes, sometimes without a clear cause.

Balloon eustachian tuboplasty is a minimally invasive procedure designed to improve eustachian tube function when symptoms persist despite medical treatment. A thin balloon catheter is guided through the nose to the eustachian tube opening, gently inflated for a short time to widen and remodel the tube, then removed. This aims to restore more normal opening and pressure regulation.

The procedure is usually performed as a day case under local or general anaesthetic, depending on individual anatomy and comfort. Studies and clinical guidance report a good safety profile, with most people returning to normal activities within a day. It is considered when long-standing symptoms significantly affect comfort, hearing, or flying tolerance.

Pinpointing the Cause

Assess First, Treat Step by Step

ET Expertise Epicentre

Assessment begins with a detailed history, ear examination, and appropriate hearing tests, often including eustachian tube function testing. We look closely at symptom triggers, duration, and impact on daily life before recommending any intervention.

Initial management is non-surgical. This may include nasal steroid sprays, allergy treatment, decongestants, auto-inflation devices, or watchful waiting. Referral for further intervention is considered only when symptoms persist, affect quality of life, and fail to respond to appropriate medical treatment.
