What is it?
Typewriter tinnitus is a rare form of tinnitus that can present with persistent, fast, intermittent clicking or tapping noises, often resembling a typewriter.

Features

  • Sudden onset and variable duration
  • May be spontaneous or linked to movement (e.g. jaw, eye)
  • Occasionally heard externally (objective tinnitus)

Mechanisms and Triggers

  • Can be due to irritation of the facial or auditory nerves
  • Can be worsened by stress, fatigue, or sensory input
  • Some cases overlap with stapedial myoclonus

Diagnosis
Requires detailed history, examination and exclusion of palatal myoclonus or brainstem disorders. Audiological, imaging and neurologic assessments are key.

Treatment Strategies

  • Anti-migraine or anti-epileptic drugs
  • Relaxation therapy, biofeedback
  • Botox or rarely or surgery in persistent, disabling cases
