Asking the Harley St AVM Experts

In this section, the experts at Harley St AVM tackle some of the most common questions associated with vestibular migraine.

What Causes Vestibular Migraine?

It is possible that vestibular migraine can be passed down genetically and then activated by certain triggers such as a lack of sleep, stress, fluctuations in hormone levels, certain foods and beverages or irregular eating schedules. On occasion, inner ear and brain problems can also act as a trigger to vestibular migraine and a detailed assessment is required to identify the source of the problem.

Are Vestibular Migraines Common?

Vestibular migraine is not a common condition but it would be incorrect to call it “rare”. It is believed to affect 2 – 3% of the UK population, with many researchers suspecting the actual number is higher because so many people never seek help for their symptoms.

What are the criteria for diagnosing vestibular migraine?

The diagnostic criteria for vestibular migraine were developed in 2012. At the time, vestibular migraine was still a newly accepted diagnosis and so rigorous criteria were established to create universally recognised research standards. These criteria include repeated episodes of vertigo, headache, photophobia, visual aura and more.

Are there effective medications for treating vestibular migraine?

There are, but not all medications will be right for all patients. As a general rule, many of the medications used to treat classic migraines can also be adapted and used to treat vestibular migraine. That includes everything from supplements like magnesium and riboflavin to prescription medications such as antidepressants, anti-seizure meds and antihypertensives.

Is vestibular migraine treated differently than classic migraine?

Treatments can be similar but because vestibular migraine includes motion sensitivity and balance issues treatment often include therapies not used for classic migraine. Your Audiovestibular Specialist will be able to determine what is the best treatment for you based on your symptom profile.
